„Grzeczność nie jest nauką łatwą ani małą…” (Jacek Wójcicki)
The volume was composed as a post-conference book, entitled ‘Politeness is neither an easy, nor a small science…’ Forms and norms of propriety (Konstancin-Obory, 20-22 October 2004). It is devoted to the norms of moral appropriateness and to maintaining (as well as the historically and socially conditioned breaking of) these norms, both in occasional and practical literature. The texts have been arranged into five thematic groups: Politeness in documents of practical literature, Appropriateness in social communication and the media, Politeness and occasional literature, A picture of norm and scandal in belles-letres, Politeness of language and the language of politeness. The articles relate to, among other things: the issue of intercultural dialogue in light of grammar for foreigners, the reflection of reality in etiquette guides from different eras, the standards of politeness in advertisement and the media, as well as the rhetoric and ridicule in press articles, examples of translation practice in the context of vulgarisms, or the moral provocation preserved in belles-letres literature. The book also contains essays devoted to propriety in texts from the beginning of the sixteenth century, through Mickiewicz, Witkacy, Gombrowicz, to controversial contemporary literature.
