The texts included in the edition titled Captive minds. Literature under duress explore the issues of censorship and self-censorship, Aesopian language, and strategies of artists against the circumstances related to political and religious repression by totalitarian systems. Discussed are also topics of text alterations and editorial changes caused by external influences, and, finally, the subjects of: moral oppression, moral taboo, the pressure of ‘good upbringing’ (family, school, environment, authority) as well as embarrassing areas of life and those which are not spoken about.
The reviews presented in the edition relate to the recently published books devoted to not-well-known, or even unknown (often anonymous) texts from the eighteenth century referring to the periods of Bar Confederation and Targowica Confederation, as well as to the dialogue between art and literature on the topic of the portrait.
